It is the second fatal accident in the Berchtesgaden Alps in recent days: A holidaymaker from Schleswig-Holstein crashed on Monday while hiking. According to the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK), the 59-year-old had fallen about 200 meters deep over the rock face during the descent from the Wasseralm over the Röthsteig.

The woman belonged to a hiking group with a total of six people. At around 1,200 meters, according to BRK, she had "stopped for a moment to tie herself to the shoe, stepping too far backwards and falling in front of her companions".

Citing the companions, the police reported that she probably did not have a good stall at the site and therefore stepped back a foot.

Emergency doctor and mountain rescuer could do nothing for the injured woman. The body was recovered with the help of a helicopter.

Only on Thursday was a 49-year-old from Thuringia in the Berchtesgaden Alps about 160 meters plunged into the depth and died. The accident took place on the Mannlgrat, a connecting ridge near the Kehlstein summit.
