The defenders of Sergei W. have demanded before the district court of Dortmund not to convict their client for attempted murder - and requested a prison sentence of well under ten years.

In his plea, attorney Carl Heydenreich said that W. was guilty only of causing an explosion of explosives. The Russian-born German had admitted in the process of having detonated three bombs in addition to the fully occupied team bus of BVB. But he denies any killing intent.

The prosecution had already applied for life imprisonment on Monday. The act of April 11, 2017 had triggered horror. Inside the bus, the central defender Marc Bartra, who was still active for Borussia Dortmund, was seriously injured in the forearm. A motorcycle cop suffered a blast trauma.

Sergej W. admitted early in the process that he had built the bombs, hidden them and detonated them with a remote detonator. Allegedly, he only wanted to spread fear and terror in order to crash the stock price of the listed football club. The 29-year-old had previously borrowed money acquired numerous warrants, with which he bet on a falling course.
