10/10 Soldier Studies - Cross-dressing in the Wehrmacht. Publisher Hatje Cantz © Collection Martin Dammann

The photo artist Martin Dammann was surprised when, during his research in photo archives, he repeatedly came across footage showing Wehrmacht soldiers wearing women's clothes. In the book Soldier Studies - Cross-dressing in the Wehrmacht (Hatje Cantz) he has published more than 100 of these snapshots and portraits. The young men in the pictures lived out their yearnings for female emotionality and sexuality "in a peculiar bliss," says Damman. A small escape in the midst of the horror and agony of war.
