A volcanic eruption in New Zealand in 2019 killed 22 people. Among the 25 survivors of the spectacular eruption, many suffered very serious burns.

The five companies responsible for the excursion of 47 tourists were ordered to pay 10 million New Zealand dollars (5.6 million euros) to the victims and their families. Video footage played in court showed people trying to flee a huge cloud of volcanic ash, which quickly engulfed them. Some people say they were not warned in advance of the dangers they faced.
