The meme was put up for auction on Tuesday by Atsuko Sato, the dog Kabosu's owner.

On Friday, it was sold.

What has been sold is a digital work of art that through cryptotechnology has been given a unique digital signature that should be impossible to copy.

"We are excited to be a part of this milestone in the history of the Internet," Don Caldwell, head of the Know Your Meme site, which was involved in certifying the meme before it went on sale, told NBC.

The image of Kabosu was uploaded online in 2010 and has since become very popular.

The dog's face adorns the logo for the cryptocurrency dogecoin and in 2019 Doge was named the "meme of the decade" by Know Your Meme.
