VfL Wolfsburg continued its successful streak in a spectacular north duel against Werder Bremen and remains unbeaten this Bundesliga season thanks to a furious attack performance.

The team of coach Oliver Glasner defeated the almost relegated from the previous season with 5: 3 (3: 2).

With their 300th success in the top German league, the Lower Saxony established themselves on the international places.

Ridle Baku in the 22nd minute, John Anthony Brooks (25th), Wout Weghorst, who scored twice (37th / 76th), and Bartosz Bialek (90th + 5) scored the goals for VfL on Friday evening.

For Wolfsburg it was the third victory in a row.

In a game that offered nice hits, intense duels and emotions, Werder were an opponent at eye level.

The goals of Leonardo Bittencourt (13th), Kevin Möhwald with a top-class header (35th) and Brooks with an own goal (47th) were too few for SVW.

In the final phase, ten of the guests ran after the deficit: Möhwald saw yellow-red after a tactical foul.

"The most boring record that the Bundesliga has to offer", as Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt put it, was set by Bremen with the amazing performance at champions FC Bayern Munich and the fifth 1-1 in a row.

There was no question of extending the series this time, and certainly not of boredom.

Wolfsburg and Werder delivered a real football festival that would have deserved a lot of spectators in the empty VW stadium.

With the reference that they were still unbeaten as one of two teams in the league, VfL immediately seized the game, was more thoughtful in its actions and more pleasing in the offensive game.

Werder scored the first goal because Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg made an unnecessary loss of the ball against Yuya Osako.

The Japanese - at short notice in the starting lineup for the failed Josh Sargent - served Bittencourt in an exemplary manner, who only had to push the ball over the line.

Coach Oliver Glasner's team was by no means shocked.

The ball rolled towards the Werder goal and soon into it.

Ridle Baku, who came from Mainz and played well, equalized with a 20-meter shot and less than three minutes later the game was turned by a header from Brooks.

Brekalo had played fine after he had almost squandered the good free-kick opportunity.

Kohfeldt did not like the order on the defensive and switched before the break.

Coach Kevin Möhwald brought in for Jean-Manuel Mbom, who was charged with a yellow card.

A spot on, because just a few minutes later the 27-year-old hit with an arc lamp to equalize again.

But the joy lasted only 77 seconds before Weghorst increased again after a pass from Admir Mehmedi and scored his fifth goal of the season.

Three goals conceded in the first 37 minutes - that was the last time Werder had in December 2019 in a 0-5 against Mainz.

The defense of the Hanseatic League seemed to have stabilized this season.

Against Wolfsburg, however, the gaps were often too big.

And yet Werder came back - thanks to Brooks.

The defensive giant deflected a harmless cross from Milot Rashica into his own goal.

A hit that threw the Lower Saxony a little off the mark.

Bittencourt almost succeeded in taking Bremen's lead if the striker hadn't dropped his shot too unplaced (64th).

But it would have been inappropriate if the evening hadn't yet another twist.

After a cross from Jerome Roussillon, Weghorst headed the hosts back into the lead.
