Musk doesn't appear to be donating the money to the United Nations World Food Program.
On February 15, local time, according to the ABC report, David Beasley of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said that WFP has not received any news from Musk, "millions of people around the world are in The brink of starvation. It remains to be seen if the WFP receives the money, but I'm glad to hear Elon is involved, it's an amazing and great first step."
Previously, regulatory filings showed that Tesla CEO Elon Musk donated $5.74 billion worth of Tesla stock in November 2021, exactly when he was named by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). A few days later, the outside world speculated that maybe Musk really donated money to WFP.
From October to November last year, Musk was repeatedly shouted by WFP for donations to address global hunger.
At the time, Beasley's Twitter confrontation with Musk drew widespread attention.
On October 26, 2021, Beasley launched an appeal to billionaires, hoping that they will solve the global food crisis.
He specifically mentioned Amazon founders Jeff Bezos and Musk, "$6 billion can help 42 million people, and if we don't help these people, they will really die."
Musk responded by saying he would donate if the United Nations could give a clear and transparent plan on how to use the money to solve world hunger.
On November 15, WFP announced the details of the plan to use the funds and once again appealed to Musk.
Beasley called out Musk on Twitter, calling the crisis urgent and unprecedented, but avoidable.
According to a filing made public by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on February 14, Musk donated a total of 5.044 million Tesla shares from November 19 to 29, 2021. At the average closing price, the donation was worth $5.74 billion.
However, the documents show that the recipient of Musk’s donation is a trust, without naming the institution.
At present, there is no information to prove that Musk's donation is related to WFP's "forced donation" behavior.
Reuters, citing analysts, said Musk could get tax benefits by donating Tesla stock because shares donated to charities are not subject to capital gains tax when sold.
"Fortune" magazine analyzed that Musk may pay more than $11 billion in taxes in 2021, and large donations may help offset some of the amount.
