Neurology Controlling inflammation, key to avoiding worsening of multiple sclerosis
Joey Jordison, drummer and founder of the American
heavy metal group
Slipknot
died on Monday at the age of 46.
Although the causes of his death are still unknown, the statement issued by his family clarifies that "he died peacefully in his sleep."
Jordison had left Slipknot in 2013 after developing
transverse myelitis
,
a disorder that causes inflammation of the spinal cord.
"The condition hit my spine and paralyzed my legs completely. It's like they had been severed, basically," he later acknowledged to the Metal Hammer half.
What is transverse myelitis?
It is the
inflammation of a part of the spinal cord,
which can lead to a variety of
motor symptoms
(weakness in the limbs),
sensory
(tingling, burning or numbness)
or autonomic
(urinary or fecal incontinence, constipation or erectile dysfunction).
The inflammation affects, in these cases, the information that the nerves of the spinal cord send to the rest of the body.
Although it is a rare disease, affecting between one and 10 people per million inhabitants,
there is a peak of prevalence in young adults.
What causes it?
There are many diseases that can lead to the development of transverse myelitis.
They could be classified as follows:
The
multiple sclerosis
: a neurological disease that causes autoimmune inflammation of the central nervous system.
Systemic diseases:
autoimmune diseases that affect the whole organism, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, Behcet and Sjögren's syndrome.
Infectious diseases
associated with viruses, such as herpes, cytomegalovirus, HIV, hepatitis B, Zika, influenza or mumps;
associated with bacteria, such as Lyme disease, syphilis, tuberculosis, whooping cough, tetanus or diphtheria.
On other occasions, the cause of transverse myelitis is not found after performing all the pertinent diagnostic tests.
What is your treatment and prognosis?
Treatment
will depend mainly on the cause of this inflammation of the spinal cord.
For example, if you are infectious, you will be given a treatment against that specific pathogen, but if you are autoimmune, you will be given corticosteroids or other related therapies.
Nor will the prognosis for all those affected be the same.
It depends on what has caused the myelitis, and
many patients can make a full recovery, while others may be left with sequelae of various kinds.
It is estimated that approximately one third regain full neurological function.
