In July of this year, the "Opinions on Further Reducing the Burden of Students' Homework and Off-campus Training in Compulsory Education" was publicly released.

The implementation of the "double reduction" policy has changed the pattern of basic education in China and also changed the lives of thousands of students, teachers and parents.

"Double reduction" is more than a hundred days, what changes will it bring?

  Children's parents relaxed

After leaving get off work at 5 pm, Beijing parent Liu Li calmly drove to her son's school.

During this time, the child ends school at 5:30 pm every day, and when he sees Liu Li, he has completed his written homework.

In the evening, the family can enjoy precious parent-child time.

"Before the'double reduction', the child had to go to the nursery school early after school. After I got home, I had to accompany him to do homework and tasks until very late. Now the family is no longer tight." Liu Li said.

School work and rest hours have changed, the burden of homework has been reduced, and the off-campus subject training classes have disappeared-this is the most direct feeling of many parents and children.

In terms of work and rest time, clear regulations have been put forward in many places.

The Beijing Municipal Education Commission requires that the morning class time for primary schools is generally no earlier than 8:20, and for middle schools no earlier than 8:00; the end of the afternoon is adjusted to 17:30.

If parents have special transportation needs, they can apply to the school.

In terms of homework burden, monitoring by the Ministry of Education showed that as of the end of October, 99.3% of compulsory education schools across the country had introduced homework management measures, 97.1% of schools established an internal homework disclosure system, and most of the students in 94.7% of schools could Complete the homework within the specified time.

According to reports, Chengdu has recently issued a homework guide for primary and secondary schools, proposing to ensure that written homework is not assigned to the first and second grades of elementary school; the average time for completing written homework in other grades of elementary school every day does not exceed 60 minutes, and that of junior high school does not exceed 90 minutes; student homework should not be transformed into Parent homework.

"Climbing mountains, watching movies, reading novels... the past few weekends, the children had a very fulfilling and very happy time." said Lin Musen, a parent of a student in Qingdao, Shandong. He used to accompany his children between several training classes on rest days. Hurry up.

After the "double reduction", under the premise of respecting the children's wishes, only one piano class was retained.

The sense of ease after "double reduction" originates from the exploration of returning to the essence of education.

Experts said that only when schools, teachers, parents and all parties in society respect the laws of education and establish a correct outlook on education and growth, can the "snatch culture" be truly broken and a good education environment can be created.

  Hobbies have increased

The bell rang after class. Dai Lixuan, a student from Guangji Central Primary School in Haishu District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, brought the harmonica to the music classroom.

Before long, melodious music came in the classroom.

On the playground not far away, the young track and field athletes are practicing in full swing.

This is the scene where Guangji Central Elementary School launched an after-school "club package" for students.

Principal Huang Tiecheng said that the school has launched after-school services focusing on in-class trusteeship since 2019.

After the implementation of the "double reduction" policy, the school opened more than 10 clubs such as sports and music based on existing teachers, venues and other resources to meet the needs of students' learning and personality development.

The implementation of the "double reduction" policy requires not only "subtraction", but also "addition" in after-school services.

Monitoring by the Ministry of Education showed that as of the end of October, among the 143,000 compulsory education schools that should provide after-school services (excluding boarding schools and small rural schools), 99% of the schools provided after-school services, and the student participation rate was 89.7%, of which more than 70% of the students participated in the whole process 5 days a week, and the teacher participation rate was 89.8%.

Experts said that "double reduction" does not mean letting children "herd sheep", but to create a healthy education ecology.

On the one hand, the quality and efficiency of learning and academic work should be improved, and the quality of teaching and learning efficiency should be improved. On the other hand, children's hobbies should be cultivated so that young people can grow up freely and healthily.

Guangzhou has made innovative measures in classroom education, encouraging schools to use artificial intelligence methods to support teaching diagnosis and improvement, organize students to conduct extended learning and deep learning, and cultivate students' active learning habits and autonomous learning capabilities.

To this end, Guangzhou proposed to create 200 typical cases in the city's primary and secondary schools, cultivate 100 intelligent education experimental schools, and explore ways to reduce burdens and increase efficiency by empowering students with artificial intelligence.

Outside of the classroom, sports, aesthetic education, etc., which have been highly valued in recent years, have become a hot spot in school after-school services.

Gao Yifan, a music teacher at Beijing No. 1 Primary School, said that the number of children participating in the after-school choir has increased significantly this semester.

"In the past, people often asked for leave for choir practice. Now many parents take the initiative to "recommend" their children, hoping that they can learn music knowledge and improve their artistic literacy."

  School education strengthened

Since the beginning of this year, the teacher rotation system has been deepened in many places, and clear requirements have been put forward in terms of the number, scope, and time of rotation, which has attracted public attention.

Among them, Beijing has made clear that a large proportion of the exchanges of cadres and teachers are promoted, and measures such as the exchange and rotation of principals in the region, the balanced allocation of key teachers, and the rotation of ordinary teachers have been promoted to narrow the gap in education levels between urban and rural areas, regions, and schools.

Shanghai proposes to ensure that every elementary school has at least 1-2 senior teachers and the proportion of senior teachers in each junior high school is not less than 5% through various methods such as the mobility and training of backbone teachers within 3 to 5 years. There is 1 full senior teacher.

Behind the job rotation is the need to improve the quality and efficiency of school education under the background of "double reduction".

Chu Zhaohui, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Educational Sciences, believes that meeting the needs of students and parents with higher-quality educational supplies should become the focus of the school's "double reduction" work.

To this end, schools should try their best to optimize teaching methods, improve classroom teaching quality, explore diversified educational and teaching activities, and meet the diversified learning needs of students and parents.

In response to the learning needs of students, Shanghai has comprehensively upgraded its online learning platform, selected a team of famous teachers to record MOOCs, and purchased high-quality courses from high-quality training institutions to create a "never-ending aerial class".

Jiangsu Nantong regards the homework assignment list and the students' workbooks as the necessary materials for teachers to participate in the evaluation of professional titles, and guarantees that “learning the feet and learning well” are guaranteed by “teaching the feet and teaching well”.

Experts pointed out that double reduction is inseparable from teachers' responsibility and ability improvement.

To this end, it is necessary to improve the school’s performance evaluation, improve the school’s student growth service system, tighten the school’s education responsibility chain, and better meet the individual development needs of students, and promote the overall healthy growth of students.
