Florian Kohfeldt should save Werder Bremen from relegation one more time.

Despite a dramatic sporting downturn with seven defeats in a row, the bosses of the Bundesliga club expressed their confidence in the coach after two days of deliberations.

This means that Kohfeldt will also sit on the Werder bench in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup against RB Leipzig on Friday.

The Werder bosses did not issue their highly esteemed, but ultimately extremely unsuccessful, coach with a free ticket until the end of the season.

"We have to look from game to game in the current situation, so I don't want to give any longer-term guarantees," said Sport Managing Director Frank Baumann.

Means: A debacle against the table runner-up from Leipzig, against whom it last set a 1: 4 in the league, and the discussions about the coach continue.

A very strange oath of loyalty to the Weser.

Relegation as an encouragement?

Despite all the criticism from the environment, those responsible still seem to have great confidence in Kohfeldt.

“The question is, what gives us the highest chance of staying in the league?

And we are convinced that this is the case with Florian, ”said Baumann.

Last season, those responsible around Kohfeldt fan Baumann had held on to the coach despite a highly precarious situation.

Kohfeldt paid back the trust and prevented with the green-whites in the relegation against the second division third 1. FC Heidenheim the first relegation since 1980.

In the current season, the North Germans had gone with the goal of "staying stable in the league" due to many departures.

Despite the often unsightly football, it seemed for a long time that Kohfeldt would manage this with his team.

After the 2-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld on March 10, Werder had eleven points ahead of 16th place and seemed saved early.

But then followed seven defeats in a row - a club negative record.

As tables-14.

Werder is now only one point ahead of 1. FC Köln on the relegation place 16. Hertha BSC is penultimate with four points behind but still has three catch-up games to play and could thus overtake Bremen in the table.

Speculation about Schaaf's comeback

After the disastrous appearance at 1: 3 at Union Berlin on Saturday, there were therefore many indications of a separation, as the club's top could not initially make a commitment to Kohfeldt.

As an interim coach, there was speculation about Werder legend Thomas Schaaf, who will celebrate his 60th birthday on Friday.

Baumann admitted talks with other candidates on Monday evening.

"I can confirm that we have looked at alternatives, but I will not comment on names," said Baumann.

Schaaf was also involved in the deliberations of the past few days.

Baumann did not want to comment on whether the Werder legend had refused to jump in.

But it seems quite possible that Kohfeldt will be able to continue because those responsible have not found a successor quickly and in view of the precarious situation.

The coach, whom Baumann perceived as “very combative” in the debates, is now under further pressure in any case.

"We have to initiate the turnaround, and we want to see that against Leipzig on Friday," Baumann clarified.

The semifinals seem like Kohfeldt's last chance to prove himself. Werder's big secret remains why a trend reversal should succeed against the strong Saxons - after all, second in the table of the current season.
