THE ESSENTIAL

  • Foreign ministers of the UN Security Council on Thursday demanded that Vladimir Putin's Russia be held accountable for its invasion of Ukraine, in front of their Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov who generally snubbed them.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his part urged the Russians on Thursday to stand up against the mobilization announced by the Kremlin faced with the refusal to fight in Ukraine by part of its population fleeing the country.

  • Starting today and until Tuesday, four regions in southern and eastern Ukraine under full or partial control of Moscow will vote in hastily organized polls to be annexed by Russia, "simulacra" of referendums denounced in the West.

China, close to Moscow, has issued criticisms, calling for respect for the territorial integrity of States.

7:17 a.m .: Start of annexation “referendums” by Russia in areas controlled by pro-Russians

Russian annexation "referendums" began on Friday in areas of Ukraine wholly or partly controlled by Moscow, Russian news agencies reported, with polls described as "sham" by kyiv and the West.

These votes, which began at 05:00 GMT, are to be held until September 27 in the pro-Russian separatist regions of Donetsk and Lugansk (east), and in areas under Russian occupation in the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye (south), in Moscow's full military offensive against Ukraine.
