At least one passenger survived a plane crash that crashed Friday in a residential area of Karachi, a government official said.

Local government spokesman Abdul Rashid Channa said in a statement that Murad Ali Shah, Prime Minister of Sindh Province, inquired about the health of banker Dhofar Mahmoud, who had been miraculously survived.

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority said the plane had 91 passengers and eight crew on board.

On the details of the disaster, the local Pakistani channel, "Geo", published an audio clip of the pilot saying that there was a failure of the engine, before losing contact with the Civil Aviation Authority, a minute before landing.

A recording posted on the monitoring site stated that the crashed plane had sent a distress signal and informed the control tower that the plane's two engines had failed in its second landing attempt.

After the plane apparently canceled an earlier landing attempt and swirled around the airport to land again, one observer informed the flight commander that he appeared to be turning left and derailing.

"We're back, sir. The two engines failed," the commander replied. The controller authorized the plane to land at any of the runways at Karachi Airport in the west and southwest of the airport.

After 12 seconds, the pilot sent a distress signal and was again authorized to land on either of the two runways.

There were no further communications from the aircraft, which was said to be an Airbus 320, according to the audio recording on the website concerned with the recordings of the aircraft.

A spokesman for the Pakistani Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that the flight of the ill-fated Karachi plane carried the number "PK 8303" with 99 passengers and 8 crew members on board.

A number of houses were destroyed by the crash of the Pakistani plane in a residential area near Karachi Airport.

Pakistan Airlines spokesman Abdullah Hafeez said it was too early to point to any technical malfunction of the plane and an independent institution would conduct an investigation to find out the cause of the accident.

Rescue sources said that 15 to 20 people were recovered from the crash site, and the body of a 5-year-old boy was found at the site.
