The Brazilian team, Atletico Mineiro, set a new record for the number of consecutive unbeaten matches in the Copa Libertadores - the equivalent of the European Champions League - in South America when they defeated Independiente del Valle from Ecuador 3-1 last night.

With this victory, Mineiro extends his unbeaten run to 18 consecutive matches, the longest run of its kind in the 62-year history of the tournament.

Hulk scored once at the start of each half, while William Andres Vargas Leon pulled one back for the Ecuadorean champions eight minutes from time, but Savio boosted Mineiro's lead again in added time.

With these two goals, Hulk raised his score to 9 goals in the tournament, to occupy the second place in his team's historical scorer list, only two goals behind Joe, who scored many goals in 2013 when Mineiro crowned his first and only title in the tournament.

With his recent victory, Mineiro leads the standings in Group D and guarantees qualification to the Round of 16 before the last round of the group stage.
