Russia is taking a series of allegations against Ukraine to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Moscow is making allegations against Kiev for shooting down the MH17 passenger plane over eastern Ukraine seven years ago, according to a statement from the Russian Public Prosecutor's Office on Thursday.

Russia also blames the Ukrainian army for the deaths of civilians during the pro-European protests in 2014 and in the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. "The hostilities of the Ukrainian armed forces pose a real threat to the life and health of Russian citizens living in border regions," said the Russian General Prosecutor's Office. Thousands of Ukrainians fled to Russia because of the fighting.

Moscow also blamed Kiev for the deaths of 298 occupants of the Malaysia Airlines passenger plane that was shot down on July 17, 2014 over the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine.

196 Dutch, 38 Australian and four Germans were among the victims.

In its complaint to the ECHR, Russia accuses the Kiev government of failing to block the airspace over eastern Ukraine despite the fighting.

An international team of investigators came to the conclusion in May 2018 that the machine was shot down by a BUK missile from an anti-aircraft brigade in Kursk, Russia.

The Netherlands and Australia then blamed Russia for the downing of the machine and the death of the 298 occupants.

Moscow denied any involvement.

War has been raging in eastern Ukraine since 2014. In the conflict, Russia is supporting the pro-Russian rebels who have proclaimed so-called People's Republics in Luhansk and Donetsk. More than 13,000 people have already been killed in the conflict.
