April 14, 2021 Bernie Madoff, the financier who pleaded guilty to orchestrating the biggest Ponzi scheme scam in history, has died aged 82 in a US federal prison.

This was revealed by sources informed on the affair to the Associated Press.

Madoff was serving a 150-year sentence in Butner Federal Prison, North Carolina.

According to the source, Madoff died at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, apparently of natural causes.

Last year, Madoff's lawyers filed a release request for the 82-year-old, noting that he suffered from end-stage kidney disease and other chronic medical conditions, but the request was denied.

Madoff admitted that he defrauded thousands of customers for billions of dollars over the course of decades.

A court-appointed trustee recovered more than $ 13 billion of the $ 17.5 billion investors would have given Madoff.

At the time of his arrest, he had fake bank statements to prove to his clients that they had $ 60 billion worth of stakes.
