178 caregivers working at the Houston Methodist Hospital (United States) have been suspended for two weeks and will be sacked if they do not get vaccinated against Covid-19.

This is the vaccination policy implemented by the establishment for some time.

Marc Boom, CEO of the establishment, regretted that "a small number of people have decided not to think above all of their patients".

, he also noted that those affected represented well less than 1% of the 25,000 employees.

Employees exhausted by the Covid-19

Among the suspended employees, 27 have already received a first dose of vaccine.

Their suspension sparked much criticism within and outside the establishment.

Amanda Rivera, who works in the emergency department of the Houston Methodist, said "feeling a little betrayed" and compared the measure taken by the Texan hospital to a "slap in the face".

She told of the "crazy" working conditions of caregivers, understaffed since the start of the pandemic, and denounced the choice of her employer.

A hundred of the suspended employees took the hospital to court, deeming this vaccine policy unfair and believing that the vaccine is still experimental.

No vaccination requirement in Texas

285 hospital employees were also exempted from the obligation to be vaccinated for medical or religious reasons.

332 others were postponed, in particular due to pregnancy.

In the United States, the vaccination rate among hospital caregivers varies between 51% and 91% depending on the hospital.

“Texas is 100% open and we want to make sure you can go anywhere you want without restriction,” said the state governor.

The elected official recently validated the entry into force of a law prohibiting health passports linked to vaccination and preventing the signing of public contracts with establishments accepting only vaccinated clients.
