UN: India, Mexico, Norway, Ireland elected members of the Security Council for 2021-2022

The UN General Assembly met this Wednesday, June 17 to appoint 5 non-permanent members of the Security Council: India, Mexico, Norway and Ireland were elected for 2021 and 2022. For the the only seat assigned to the African continent, Djibouti and Kenya are forced into a second round which will be held this Thursday.

The only candidates for their Asia and Latin America regions , India won 184 votes and Mexico 187 out of 192 countries that participated in the ballot. Canada, which belongs to the Western Europe and others region, was dominated by Norway, 130 votes, and Ireland, 128, the figure which was the minimum required to win. The country had already been sharply eliminated in 2010 against Portugal, credited with 108 votes.

For the African continent, Djibouti and Kenya vie for a seat. Neither of them wanted to withdraw even though the candidacies are usually presented by consensus. Kenya obtained 113 votes against its rival, Djibouti, credited with 78 votes. To win, applicants must collect in a second round this Thursday, two thirds of the votes cast.

The UN Security Council has 15 members, five of whom are permanent and ten non-permanent, halved each year. Prestigious positions that can allow certain countries to advance their agendas.

During the election, this Wednesday, June 17, the members of the General Assembly also elected as next president for the 2020-2021 session the Turkish Volkan Bozkir, diplomat and ex-minister, the only candidate in the running. He won 178 out of 192 votes cast in the ballot.
