More and more cyclists in France.

According to a survey published on Thursday, 65% of French people have cycled at least once in the past 12 months.

The survey was carried out for Union Sport et cycle, which represents companies in the sector, and the insurance company AG2R La Mondiale.

The results show that 37% of cyclists cycle at least once a week and that the use of “vélotaf” is growing.

An increasing practice with the Covid-19

“Cycling in the city continues to increase (66% of city dwellers), without damaging the image of cyclists,” underline the sponsors of the survey in a press release.

“Quite the contrary: 62% of French people have a good image of cyclists.

» 65% of respondents, especially young people, think that the bicycle is « the future of daily travel » when 35 % see it as a « gadget for urban dwellers ».

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, bicycle sales have exploded, particularly benefiting electric-assisted bicycles (VAE).

Leisure practice remains the majority (50%) and sports practice is important (26%), but 18% of respondents have also used a bicycle at least once in the last 12 months for daily travel.

More cycle paths and secure parking lots

8% of French people say they cycle to work at least once a week.

The majority of them are men under 50 living in towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants.

This "vélotaf" journey lasts an average of 23 minutes for 6 km.

4% of French people also say they have recently taken a bike trip, particularly in the Pays-de-la-Loire.

To further develop the practice of cycling, 28% of respondents consider it a priority to set up more cycle paths and 21% would like adapted and secure parking, in particular to avoid theft.
