Turki Al-Sheikh tops “Social Media” with his “provocative” talk about Samira Tawfik

A talk by the head of the General Authority for Entertainment in Saudi Arabia, Turki Al-Sheikh, about the artist, Samira Tawfiq, sparked a wide wave of controversy on social networking sites, during his participation in a discussion room broadcast live on Twitter, in which journalists and artists participated.

In response to a question about whether major artists are expected to participate in the Riyadh season, such as Samira Tawfiq, Al-Sheikh replied, "My goal is commercial... I invite people to fill the stage with fans, I do not honor anyone."

Al-Sheikh went on to say that "ninety percent of Samira Tawfiq's generation died, and only you remained," addressing the journalist.

Al-Sheikh’s answer quickly turned into a rich material for discussion and dialogue on social media platforms between a supporter of his point of view, and a rejection of the words that were described as provocative, defending a capable artist who provided a lot to her audience over many years.

Under the hashtag #Samira_Tawfik, tweets circulated clips of her famous concerts and songs, and young people expressed their love for her, contrary to what Al Sheikh and those who agreed with him said that her audience is only elderly.

Turki Al-Sheikh did not respond to this controversy until now.
