At least 27 people were killed and more than 800 were injured in the earthquake in the Aegean Sea, a sea between Turkey and Greece.
As Turkey's disaster authorities proceed to take action, the magnitude of the casualties is expected to increase.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred at around 3pm local time on the 30th local time in the waters of Samos Island, Greece, close to the coast of Izmir in western Turkey, about 14km away.
Turkey's Disaster and Crisis Management Agency (AFAD) announced the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.6, followed by 470 aftershocks, of which 35 were over 4.0.
AFAD said 25 deaths were confirmed as of 9 a.m. local time on the 31st, and at least 804 were injured.
Two people died on the island of Samos, Greece, with a total of 27 confirmed deaths to date.
