There are 32 teams that get the chance to play the group game in the Champions League (CL), but 26 of them are directly qualified via successful seasons in the highest ranked leagues.
The other six places are added via qualifiers and four of them are included in the so-called master track.
There, Malmö FF has reached a decisive playoff and now the Bulgarian Ludogorets are waiting for a double meeting.
"Champions League final"
- I call it the final of the Champions League.
A final over 180 minutes of possible extra time and we deserve to be there, says Malmö coach Jon Dahl Tomasson before Wednesday's home match.
MFF - which reached CL games in 2014 and 2015 - has won three double meetings to get to the situation the club is now in.
- It is a long journey to reach the Champions League.
We dream of taking the place and it is allowed for us to dream.
The guys have done a fantastic job so far, says Tomasson.
Malmö has already secured games in the Europa League group stage and over SEK 90 million.
When the Scanians win the Champions League, the club will receive a full SEK 160 million just for the place in the fine room.
- Everyone knows that it is a huge match for us.
It gives me energy as a coach and it gives the players energy, says Tomasson.
Even though Malmö beat Scottish Glasgow Rangers in the last qualifying round, defender Niklas Moisander reckons that Bulgarian Ludogorets is a difficult opponent.
- Honestly, it will be our toughest test so far.
They have individually skilled players, says the Finn Moisander, who joined MFF from Werder Bremen this summer.
Ten straight league titles
The turn against Rangers away in the last qualifying round has given the MFF players energy.
- Of course.
It was a tough situation to be a man less with half a game left to play, but we showed which team we were and did not panic, says Moisander.
Despite the fact that the year 1945 is in the official name, the club Ludogorets actually has only a little over ten years of history.
In the early 2010s, the club was bought by a Bulgarian businessman who above all earned his millions in the pharmaceutical industry and in 2011 Ludogorets reached the Bulgarian top league for the first time.
What has happened since then?
Ten out of ten possible league titles and promotion to group games in Europe on seven occasions, of which twice in the Champions League.
In the Europa League, it has been a round of 16 and games in the round of 16 on three occasions.
