"You can't win the Masters on day one, but you can lose it."

Words from Jon Rahm, who keeps his options to fight for the Augusta Masters intact, after finishing his first 18 holes with a score of 69 shots (13th).

This is Rahm's eighth consecutive under par lap at Augusta.

The record is held by Tiger Woods, who signed 10 in a row between 2000 and 2002. The first day was affected by a strong storm, which forced the game to stop for more than three hours.

More than half of the tournament field could not finish these first 18 holes.

They will have to resume their laps from 7:30 local time.

Rahm was able to bounce back from adversity, as the Barrika player started with two bogeys on the first three holes.

"For those who are concerned, when you wake up at 4:30 in the morning, you warm up and when I was on my way to the first hole tee, the game stops for three hours, it is a bit difficult to adapt to the conditions of the field."

Rahm took advantage of the two pairs of 13 and 15 to achieve birdies and closed his first nine holes with another great birdie that left him under par for the course.

On hole two, par 5, he hit the shot of the day after leaving his second shot one meter from the hole.

The two's eagle and a new birdie on hole 3 catapulted him to -4, the second position of the tournament.

The end of the lap was choked again with a couple of bad approach shots at hole 7 (bogey) and hole 8, a par five where he could not make the birdie.

"I'm happy where I am, today's lap was perfect to start," said the Spaniard, who is four strokes behind the leader, Paul Casey, with a card of 65 strokes (7 under par).

But if there was a protagonist of these first 18 holes, it is the defending champion Tiger Woods, crouched in fifth position thanks to an extraordinary 68 strokes without error.

His card marks Tiger's best first round at an Augusta Masters, and the first time he has opened the tournament without committing a single bogey.

Tiger had not signed an error-free card in majors since the 2009 PGA Championship, totaling 4,109 days and 106 laps in majors.

Skill trumps power

Another of the great headlines of this first day was that power did not prevail over ability,

Bryson Dechambeau

was very erratic from the tee and could only finish with 70 strokes (-2), on a day where the best was the result .

The American bomber is tied for 21st place provisionally with

Larry Mize

among other players, the Augusta-born American veteran is 62 years old and won the 1987 Masters. His 70 hits have more merit even considering that he averaged an average distance from the ground. 222 meter tee, about 80 less than Bryson Dechambeau's average tee shot.

As for the rest of the Spanish,

Rafa Cabrera Bello

finished with +1, after a promising start where he managed to beat Augusta National by up to three strokes and

José María Olazábal,

who at the end of the day left him with +2 after 8 holes .
