On June 17, local time, the United Nations General Assembly held a vote to elect India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway as non-permanent members of the Security Council from 2021 to 2022.

Despite the continuing epidemic of new pneumonia, 192 Member States of the United Nations voted at the UN General Assembly. India received 184 votes, Mexico received 187 votes, Norway received 130 votes, and Ireland received 128 votes. The newly elected four countries will succeed South Africa, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Belgium and Germany. The current non-permanent members of the Security Council include Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam, who were elected last year.

According to regulations, since Kenya won 113 votes and Djibouti won 78 votes, which did not exceed two-thirds of the total number of valid votes of the General Assembly, but the Security Council must have 5 new countries become non-permanent members, so the General Assembly will be on the morning of the 18th. He re-voted to re-select another country from Africa and the Asia-Pacific region to fill the non-permanent members of the Security Council.

The Security Council is composed of 15 member states, of which 5 are permanent members, including China, the United States, Russia, France and the United Kingdom. The 10 non-permanent seats are allocated by region, including 2 in Asia, 3 in Africa, 2 in Latin America, 1 in Eastern Europe, and 2 in Western Europe and other countries. According to regulations, the non-permanent members of the Security Council are elected by secret ballot by the UN General Assembly. Candidate countries need to obtain at least two-thirds of the votes of the UN General Assembly before they can be elected as non-permanent members.

The term of non-permanent members is 2 years, and 5 seats will be replaced by elections each year from 5 regions. They cannot be re-elected. The 15 members of the Security Council will take turns as chairman for a period of one month.

Since the resolution of the UN General Assembly in 2014, the election of non-permanent members of the Security Council has been moved from October to June every year to allow newly elected members more time to prepare for their tenure.

The Security Council has the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. It is the only body of the United Nations whose resolutions are binding on all members of the organization. (CCTV reporter Xu Dezhi)
