It is a trial that already promises to be extraordinary, given the number of victims.

Dino Scala, nicknamed the "rapist of the Sambre", will be tried from June 10 to July 1 before the Assizes of the North, for rapes and sexual assaults committed on 56 victims, between 1988 and 2018.

This worker with a clean criminal record, married and father of three children, was arrested in February 2018 outside his home in Pont-sur-Sambre (North), as part of a sprawling judicial investigation, opened in 1996.

He usually attacked women from behind in the early morning

In police custody, he quickly admitted having attacked around forty women, some of them minors, claiming to have acted "under the influence of impulses that he could not control".

According to the investigation, he generally attacked women from behind, in the early morning and on the public highway, but wearing gloves and concealing his face.

He often strangled them with his forearm, a scarf or a rope and could threaten them with a knife.

Arrested in February 2018

He is suspected of having raged in several localities in the Sambre basin, a river which crosses the Franco-Belgian border.

A final assault, in the Belgian town of Erquelinnes in February 2018, allowed investigators to trace him.

In June 2019, Belgium transmitted to France several files of rape and/or indecent assault, committed between 2004 and 2018, likely to have been committed by Dino Scala, including one dating back to 2006 in which his DNA was highlighted.

The facts retained by the courts concern a total of 56 victims, attacked on one side or the other of the border, according to the general prosecutor's office.
