André-Pierre Gignac cannot do everything.
Author of a hat-trick, including two penalties, the French striker of the Tigres de Monterrey could not prevent the elimination of his team on Saturday, in the semi-finals of the 2022 closing tournament of the Mexican championship.
The Tigers, where Florian Thauvin also plays, who played the second half, won their return match against Atlas de Guadalajara (4-2).
They thought they could hold the final until the twilight of added time, leading 4-1 after their 3-0 defeat in the first leg against the defending champions, under the rule which decides between clubs tied according to their ranking in the regular season, where the Tigers finished 2nd, and the Atlas 3rd.
But a very late penalty awarded to Atlas was transformed by Aldo Rocha after additional time (90th + 10)…
Gignac, top scorer in the history of the Tigres with 164 goals, won the closing tournament in 2019 and three opening tournaments in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Thauvin, who arrived in the summer of 2021 from Marseille, does not has yet to win any trophies with his new team.
