The southern white rhino was considered extinct at the end of the 19th century.

But in 1895, authorities discovered a population in South Africa.

Since then, everything has been put in place to save the species from extinction, including the creation of Africa's first nature reserve in 1898.

The southern white rhino population has increased significantly and the species has been reintroduced to other areas.

In 2012, more than 21,000 individuals were identified.

Despite this significant increase, poaching still threatens the species, because the horns of this animal are highly prized in Asia.
