His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, gifted the House of Wisdom, the latest cultural edifice in the UAE, 12,000 books and publications from the rarest and most valuable publications specialized in the history of Arab and Islamic art and architecture, in a new honor from His Highness to enrich the sources The knowledge available in the landmark that embodies Sharjah’s title of World Book Capital for 2019 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The honor, which is a continuation of His Highness' approach to donating books and manuscripts to libraries and institutions in the UAE and the Arab world, reflects His Highness' keenness to enhance the presence of the House of Wisdom among researchers, academics and lovers of science and knowledge, especially since this edifice bears in its design and all its details the vision of His Highness, and is based on the cultural project. Which laid its features more than forty years ago, and combines the elements of architecture, art and nature that characterize the emirate.
The precious collection of publications represents the private library of German-American historian Professor Richard Ettinghausen and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Ettinghausen, which His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah preferred to acquire and include them in references and books of the "House of Wisdom", to be a source and reference for the history of arts known by Arabs and Muslims throughout history, as it includes books In more than 10 languages, including: Arabic, English, German, Farsi, Japanese, Urdu, French, Spanish, Turkish, Russian and Italian.
A team of specialists in the House of Wisdom sorts and categorizes books to work on organizing a special exhibition of collectibles that allows the public, including book lovers, researchers, and readers, to view the most prominent works included in the collections, the most important manuscripts, and publications from various languages on the history of Islamic arts.
The director of the House of Wisdom, Marwa Obaid Al-Aqroubi, valued the honor of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and considered it a continuation of His Highness’s path of giving in supplying local and Arab libraries and providing generations with science, knowledge and literature.
She emphasized that the collections would bear witness to the exploits of an educated leader and ruler who appreciates the importance of the book.
The gifted book collection includes a wide variety of rare publications, some of which date back more than 100 years, including a rare edition dating back to 1888 of “This is a book of the wills of Khawaja Nizam al-Mulk,” by the Persian minister Abu Ali Hassan bin Ali al-Tusi, known as Nizam al-Mulk. This book, one of the only two copies in the world, is a treatise on governance and political science.
Other rare collectibles include a large 1898 book on glassware, Islamic ornaments and ornaments by Gustav Schmornz, and an original copy of a very rare catalog of Islamic and decorative arts dating from 1910, entitled "Exhibition of Masterpieces of Islamic Art in Munich".
The collection also includes a complete and rare edition of "From the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf... Through the Hauran, the Syrian Desert and Mesopotamia" dating back to 1899, by Max Freiherr von Oppenheim.
