The Charpoua refuge (Haute-Savoie), located at an altitude of 3,000 m in the Mont-Blanc massif, will be destroyed and rebuilt identically.

The hut had welcomed visitors for 118 years.

To allow demolition work, the oldest shelter in the Alps will close its doors this Thursday, indicates France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

Currently, the hut offers 12 beds on a surface of 24 m2.

The new refuge will see the light of day at the same location from spring 2023 at the earliest.

It will benefit from a more modern construction but will remain of rudimentary comfort.

Some furniture will be numbered and kept in the new refuge.

The dining area will be separated from the sleeping quarters for convenience.

The caretaker will have at her disposal the bottom of the refuge, used today as storage space.

A rainwater collector will also be installed on the roof.
