After being canceled last year, the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, a major sporting event, will be held on May 23 with 7,500 spectators, regardless of their origin, but who will have to present a negative PCR test for Covid-19 , the Principality's government announced on Tuesday.
The gauge of the event usually approaches 20,000 visitors in the stands.
"It is at the same time important that it be held with a minimum participation of the public and in incontestable sanitary conditions", underlined the Minister of State Pierre Dartout.
Residents and employees of the Principality are exempt from testing.
Three days open to the public
The stands will therefore be open on Thursday 20, Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 May, the day of the competition, to nearly 40% of their capacity (i.e. 7,500 spectators) to enforce distancing measures.
On Friday 21, they will only welcome 3,000 people.
This is a fairly exceptional gauge in the health context, while in France outdoor sports establishments will be able to reconnect with the public on May 19 but with a maximum of 1,000 spectators.
However, this configuration will not allow the Principality to benefit from the usual windfall of the event.
According to a study by the Monegasque Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies, the event, which represents 1.5% of GDP, generates up to 100 million euros in spinoffs.
In 2017, the hotel and catering sector each garnered more than 18 million.
