In 2014, the Ice bucket challenge campaign went viral.

The challenge was that participants got ice cold water and ice cubes poured over them.

Then three others were nominated to take on the challenge within 24 hours.

If you did not want to get ice cold water over you, you had to donate money to a charity.

People all over the world accepted both the challenge and donated money.

"We are devastated"

The challenge already flourished online before Patrick Quinn and Pete Frates went viral with the aim of raising awareness and raising money to fight ALS.

During the campaign, $ 220 million was raised for ALS research.

- Pat fought ALS with positivity and courage and inspired everyone around him. We who knew him are devastated, but grateful for everything he did to promote the fight against ALS, the ALS Association writes in a press release.
