After a year 2020 marked by the health crisis and confinements, the French video game market continued to grow in 2021 with a turnover of 5.6 billion euros, up 1.6%, according to a report published on Monday.

"The French have never played so much"

Between 2019 and 2021, total sales of hardware (PC, consoles), games and accessories rose by 13.5%, announced the Syndicate of software publishers (Sell).

“The year 2020 had been extraordinary, but special because of the context.

This growth, confirmed in 2021, is a real underlying trend.

The French have never played so much, ”underlines the president of Sell, Julie Chalmette.

New consoles

Under the effect of the arrival of new consoles, PlayStation 5 (Sony) and Xbox Series (Microsoft), and strong dynamism in sales of PCs intended for "gaming", the video game market was driven by growth in the " hardware” (equipment), which generated “historic” turnover of 1.766 billion euros, representing growth of 22% over one year.

Over 2 million consoles sold

In 2021, 2.37 million consoles (+ 2.4%) and 991,000 gaming PCs were sold in total in France.

With 795 million euros generated, console sales recorded their best performance since 2010 (873 million euros), with growth of 17%.

Without the difficulties in supplying semiconductors, which did not allow manufacturers to meet the strong demand from players, growth "would even have been stronger", underlines Chalmette.

Console sales therefore benefit from a "huge reservoir of growth for the years to come because the demand is there", she adds.

“Fifa” at the top of the ranking

As for the most popular games in 2021, it is once again the annual edition of the "Fifa" football simulation that topped the rankings, with 1.592 million copies sold, all platforms combined (excluding sales data). dematerialized from Nintendo).

Nintendo's Switch console has placed nine titles in the Top 20, with both games released in 2021 ("Pokémon Sparkling Diamond" and "Pokémon Sparkling Pearl" which between them exceed 700,000 cumulative copies) and others older like "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe", second in the ranking (503,150 sales) and still popular despite its release in 2017.
