Coronavirus requires, the 72nd edition of the Emmy Awards took up on Sunday the bet of a 100% virtual ceremony with the comedian Jimmy Kimmel (almost) alone in front of an (almost) deserted room.

The ceremony, which crowned Canadian comedy

Schitt's Creek

, Damon Lindelof

Watchmen's

miniseries

and HBO's flagship

Succession

, still had a few surprises in store for series fans.

Here are the five highlights of the ceremony.

Pand'Emmys

The Covid-19 contaminated the 72nd edition of the Emmy Awards.

"The big question is why are you having an awards show in the middle of a pandemic, no seriously, I'm asking why we are having an awards show in the middle of a pandemic," Jimmy Kimmel said at the start of the ceremony faced a virtual crowd from previous Emmys.

A passage that caused a lot of confusion on social networks, before the comedian finally revealed that he was all alone at Staples Center, well, with the exception of a motionless Jason Bateman.

"It was a miserable year, a year of division, injustice, disease, skipping school and death", he added, before going on with some valves on the age of Norman Lear and on Quibi's expenses.

The comedian then welcomed Jennifer Aniston for a sketch where they joked about the difficulty of communicating while respecting too much social distancing and recalled the need to properly disinfect the envelopes of the nominees ... at the risk of igniting the evening.

Reese Whitherspoon and Kerry Washington's Early New Years

Later that night, Reese Whitherspoon and Kerry Washington and the entire Prime Video

Little Fires Everywhere

miniseries team

celebrated New Year's Eve a little early.

“We can't wait for this year to end,” Reese Witherspoon argued as Kerry Washington started the countdown.

After thanking the show's creator, the young star added, “I know it's a really, really weird time to party but I just want to say that there is hope in young people.

I know our series is not always a good example of this, but there is hope among young people ”.

A mini-meeting of the stars of "Friends"

Fans of the sitcom

Friends

were able to appreciate the unexpected reunion of the actresses of their cult series.

Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow have appeared around Jennifer Aniston.

“We live together,” Courteney Cox joked.

" Really ?

Jimmy Kimmel retorted.

Anthony Anderson's Powerful "Black Lives Matter"

Black-ish

star Anthony Anderson took

to the Staples Center stage alongside Jimmy Kimmel for a skit about how the 2020 Emmys would have been an incredible ceremony for black Americans, if the audience could have been there in no one.

“We have a record number of Black Emmy nominees this year, which is great,” he began.

And to continue: “This is the moment when the whites start to applaud and nod their heads.

Thanks, Jimmy.

"

“It was supposed to be the blackest Emmys of all time.

You wouldn't be able to handle how Black that would be, "said Anderson," but because of the Covid, we can't even get into that damn building!

"These Emmys would have been the all-star weekend of the NBA and Wakanda all in one," he added.

Anthony Anderson went on to say that there would have been speeches citing Black American writer, poet, actress and activist Maya Angelou, Black American poet, short story writer, playwright and columnist Langston Hughes and even rapper Cardi B.

“It's not what it should have been, but I continue to support all black people because black stories, performances and lives are important,” he said again.

The two men then sang "Black Lives Matter" louder and louder.

“That's right, and because black lives are important, blacks will stay home tonight to be safe.

Which is good, because guess what?

You don't know how to enlighten us anyway, ”he concluded.

By giving voice to Anthony Anderson, by crowning young black American actress Zendaya, the Canadian inclusive series

Schitt's Creek,

the miniseries on racial violence

Watchmen

and the anti-Trump charge

Succession,

the Emmys Awards ceremony, at about 40 days of the American elections, was eminently political… The Television Academy has also seriously outdated the Academy of Oscars, always criticized for its lack of diversity.
