Red water of unknown origin leaked into the Dead Sea in Jordan on Saturday morning, according to citizens in the southern Jordan Valley.
The head of the Water and Agriculture Committee of the Karak Governorate Council, Fathi Al-Huwaimel, said that the residents found the water of one of the streams that feeds from the springs of water above the mountains in Ghor Al-Haditha, and it was completely dyed red, which raised their fears, according to the Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad.
Al-Huwaimel pointed out that the official authorities were contacted to work on identifying the source of the water.
Director of Agriculture in the Southern Jordan Valley, Engineer Yassin al-Kasasbeh, confirmed that the search is underway to uncover the incident. He added, “This hole is located under the Haditha Dam under construction, and this phenomenon is found in the ponds adjacent to the sea due to the presence of bacteria and red algae that love salinity, which changes color with the presence of sunlight.”
For his part, Director of Karak Environment Rashid Al-Maaytah announced the formation of a team from the Directorate to visit the site and find out the reason for the presence of water in red.
