• The cultural establishment, which reopens its doors on Saturday, had remained closed since the first confinement on March 15, 2020.

  • The exhibition by star graffiti artist JonOne, which had just been installed, thus remained hung for eighteen months, without being presented to the public.

  • This exhibition presents a retrospective of the work of the artist who also created on the walls in the institute.

There will be a special atmosphere on Saturday when the Bernard Magrez Cultural Institute reopens in Bordeaux. The exhibition presented there,

Free Spirit

by American graffiti artist and painter JonOne, has been sleeping within the walls of the prestigious mansion for… eighteen months. “There is a little

Sleeping Beauty side

that we are waking up today,” confirms the director of the establishment Aurélien Desailloud.

The cultural center housed in the Château Labottière rue de Tivoli, had closed its doors during the first confinement, on March 15, 2020. The assembly of the JonOne exhibition had just been completed.

“Lexpo remained on hold during this time, explains Aurélien Desailloud, because we made the choice not to reopen until the epidemic was behind us.

If nothing says that the pandemic is over, the conditions seem more favorable to finally welcome the public.

The director of the site specifies that it was necessary to "come regularly to ventilate" this exhibition and to maintain "a certain temperature and humidity.

The

Free Spirit

exhibition

presents a retrospective of the artist's iconic works, from the 90s to today. Canvases, drawings, videos and sculptures retrace JonOne's abundant and eclectic journey. Welcomed in residence at the Institute, he took over the premises and created for the occasion on the walls, original works and installations, a real dialogue between his art and the exhibition spaces. This is the first

exhibition

of the American in France.

Château Labottière took advantage of this long break to do some work and review its organization.

"We are now open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and we are organizing more guided tours than before, including one on Saturdays with artists' workshops for children, in connection with the Institute's exhibitions" explains Aurélien Desailloud.

The

Free Spirit

exhibition

lasts until February 27, 2022. “Then we will present a retrospective of the Bernard Magrez collection, with works by major contemporary artists such as JR, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Valérie Belin…”
