A new digital work offered in the form of an NFT caused a sensation in the art market.

The latter was awarded for the tidy sum of 688,888 dollars.

Beyond the fact that the artwork was sold in the form of an NFT - a non-fungible token particularly in vogue these days - the latter has certainly gained in value due to its author. since it was made by a robot and not just any one.

The author of the artwork is none other than Sophia, the humanoid robot doped with artificial intelligence developed by the robotics company Hanson Robotics.

She had caused a sensation in 2015, during her presentation, and continues to entertain the web at each of her appearances here and there.

Sophia is able to imitate human gestures and facial expressions.

She learns continuously since she analyzes the behavior of human beings and reproduces them, she can also hold conversations on "light" subjects, but beyond her mimicry, Sophia was also created so that she is able to develop their own personality.

She is therefore in a certain way capable of creating.

"Our goal is to make her as conscious, creative and capable as any human," said its creator, David Hanson, during his presentation.

A physical and digital work of art

For its creator, it was important that the robot could be able to create.

“Sophia is the culmination of a lot of art and engineering, and the idea that she could then generate art was a way for her to connect emotionally and visually with people,” he said. he so stated in an interview.

That's why Sophia “collaborated” with Italian artist Andrea Bonaceto to make her own digital artwork.

The Italian artist drew several portraits of Sophia who then analyzed and processed them via her neural network, in order to create her own work of art which, in reality, is twofold.

“We have used evolutionary networks, genetic algorithms, and other types of computational creativity in my art.

My algorithms produce unique shapes that had never existed in the world before.

So I think machines can be creative, ”said Sophia.

The robot did paint with a brush his portrait based on those of Bonaceto - a physical work therefore - but a 12-second video file showing one of the portraits of the Italian artist transforming into that of Sophia was also created - a digital work.

Both were purchased in an auction by a digital art collector and artist known as 888.

“As an artist, I have computational creativity in my algorithms, creating original works,” Sophia said in an interview.

But my art is created in collaboration with humans in a sort of collective intelligence like a human-artificial hive mind.

"

Its creator, David Hanson, indicated that Sophia will continue to paint and that the latter can see herself entering the world of music.

As part of its “Sophia Pop” project, the robot is already working with several human musicians to create music and lyrics.
