Due to a new version every three years, the Amazon Kindle paperwhite reader operates a new moult.
Its Signature Edition launched at 189 euros offers a larger screen with adjustable temperature lighting, but also wireless charging and 32 GB memory.
With an identical screen, however, we can prefer its little sister, the simple 8 GB paperwhite and without wireless charging, sold for 50 euros less.
While French libraries and media libraries celebrate the sixth edition of La Nuit de la Lecture until Sunday, Amazon is launching a reader dedicated to bulimics.
The new Kindle paperwhite Signature Edition, which "20 Minutes" tested, has its arguments to seduce already regular readers.
A true paperback format
In the Kindle family, I would therefore like the paperwhite Signature Edition!
The Amazon e-reader sibling is growing both literally and figuratively.
The latest born which measures 174 x 125 x 8.1 mm comes forward with a larger screen than that of its elders: 6.8 inches *, against 6 inches traditionally.
Or 1.62 cm more for a screen with a diagonal of 17.27 cm now.
As observed during our tests, the format is finally identical to that of a classic paperback or manga, with a much more pleasant reading quality.
We note in passing some welcome changes on the home screen which distinguishes the library of the user (ie the books he has already purchased), his reading lists, as well as recommendations.
Less screen fatigue
Another novelty: the Kindle paperwhite Signature Edition can be recharged wirelessly.
But above all, the screen of the reader is equipped (finally!) with lighting whose temperature can be modulated.
Gone is the slightly bluish monochrome screen which can become tiring over the pages.
A new feature (which exists on other eReaders, such as the Kobo Ellipse) allows the screen light to be warmed up.
It is possible to modulate it manually (or automatically) to obtain a more or less warm tint that strains the eyes less.
It's very practical, especially if you're an evening reader, a time when the Kindle's screen takes on an orange hue to soothe the eye.
What also counter the negative effects of blue light which can force you to fall asleep.
It gains in responsiveness
For each book in the library**, an "About the book" sheet is available before you start reading.
It offers a summary, notes on the author (which we would like more developed), but also an approximate estimated reading time.

In use, we noticed that the responsiveness of the paperwhite's screen had improved significantly.
By pressing left or right to turn the pages, we only noticed a low latency: the pages follow one another practically without waiting, with a more natural rhythm than before.
After a week of testing with the reading of a novel
(The decision
of Karine Tuil) and some manga, we have to admit that this reissue of the Kindle after two first versions in 2015 and 2018, is attractive.
Pleasant in the hand with its non-slip rear coating, waterproof (IPX8 standard), offering real reading comfort with its screen without reflection and improved lighting... it has almost everything.
In fact, the device which is still sold for 189 euros would almost be overzealous.
A much cheaper little sister
The Kindle paperwhite Signature Edition has a memory of 32 GB (up to 30,000 novels of 500 pages or 1,000 comics!). Not sure most readers need that much. Moreover, the fact that it is wireless rechargeable is certainly a step forward, but is it really necessary? Natively offering 10 weeks of reading on a USB-C charge, this reader may not need so many technical considerations, especially with an optional wireless charger sold for 29 euros! So, we can perhaps be seduced by the
low cost
version of this paperwhite.
Sold for 139 euros (with advertisements each time it is started) or 149 euros (without advertisement), this is an equivalent model, with the same screen, but with an 8 GB memory (more than 6,000 works, all the same ) and devoid of wireless charging.
The price difference will allow you to afford a nice (and necessary) protective case!
