An agency of the State of California (United States) filed a complaint against Tesla for racial discrimination.

After receiving "hundreds of complaints", the DFEH says it has evidence showing that the factory located in Fremont is a place of "racial segregation".

“Black workers face racial slurs and discrimination in terms of job duties, discipline, pay and promotion,” Kevin Kish, director of the agency that investigates civil cases, said on Wednesday.

“It creates a hostile work environment.

The facts in this case speak for themselves.

Insulted, exploited and humiliated

The DFEH (Department of Fair Employment and Housing) emailed excerpts from the lawsuit filed in a California court.

The document cites numerous examples of verbal abuse, including the "N-word."

“Because the factory is racially segregated, factory workers referred to areas where many African Americans worked as the 'porch monkey station',” the complaint states.

Some employees say they have been insulted 50 to 100 times a day.

The complaint points out that black employees are assigned to physically more difficult tasks than others in Tesla factories.

They are more easily fired for minor infractions and are much less remembered promoted.

“For many black workers, the stress of racial harassment, the risk of physical altercations with harassers, blatant discrimination, disproportionate discipline and inaction in the face of complaints have made their working conditions so intolerable that they have resigned,” the complaint states.

Several employees and ex-employees have filed complaints in recent months for sexual harassment or racism.

Already a condemnation

Tesla had already communicated the same morning on these lawsuits, before they were confirmed.

"Tesla firmly opposes all forms of discrimination and harassment and has a dedicated employee relations team to respond to and investigate all complaints," the group said in a statement.

“Tesla has consistently disciplined and terminated employees for misconduct, including those who slur racially or harass others,” the company said.

In October 2021, the group was ordered to pay $137 million to a former black employee who suffered racism at a factory.

The company intends to ask the court to stay the proceedings to ensure that all the facts and evidence are taken into account.

The automaker says it regrets that the DFEH did not provide it with the specific charges on which its lawsuits are based.
