Significantly more cyclists and car drivers. In Lyon, since the beginning of deconfinement, the traffic routes have been taken by storm as planned by soft modes and cars, to the detriment of public transport in Lyon, still little used.

To anticipate the increase in the use of soft modes, the metropolitan area of Lyon launched in early May a "tactical town planning" plan, allowing the rapid and temporary development of 23 new cycle routes in Lyon and in the agglomeration . If for 19 of these tracks, everything has worked well since deconfinement, for four routes, the metropolis had to review its copy. "Two axes require adjustments and two must be suspended," said this Wednesday the services of the current president of the agglomeration David Kimelfeld.

Overcrowded axes since the reduction of lanes

The cycle path installed more than a month ago on the Guillotière bridge will be eliminated, due to multiple traffic jams created after the elimination of a traffic lane between rue de la Barre and place Gabriel-Péri. On this route, the journey times have been multiplied by three depending on the metropolis which invites cyclists to refer to the cycle lane existing until then and maintained.

Same situation on avenue de Saxe, where permanent traffic jams have formed since the development of a lane dedicated to modes and buses. "Faced with insufficiently verbalized double-line parking lots and the closure of the hopper under Perrache, which results in a large carryover of traffic, the result was mixed with a journey time increased by almost 50% for motorists", detail the services. On this route, cyclists will be able to take the double secure cycle path on the quays of the Rhône or refer to the secure strips of rue Garibaldi.

Rue Duquesne, where bike traffic has increased by 33% compared to the same period in 2019, the development of the bike path on a traffic lane will start from avenue Foch (and no longer from the quay of Serbia) in order to improve the functioning of the crossroads on the quays of the Rhône left bank. Quai Charles de Gaulle, where traffic congestion has been observed since the deconfinement, regulation of the traffic lights at the roundabout leading to boulevard Laurent Bonnevay / la Doua is planned to ease traffic.

After the delivery of 23 km of provisional tracks in recent weeks, another 30 km should be given to soft modes by the beginning of July for a total of 80 km planned by the start of the September in 30 municipalities in the agglomeration .
