Bagher Namazi, an 85-year-old Iranian-American, had been in prison

for eight years for collaborating with an enemy government

, i.e. the United States.

The former Unicef official was able to leave the country "

to receive medical treatment abroad

", said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

His son, Siamak Namazi, was also released but has not yet been allowed to leave the country.

These releases come as the news site Nournews, close to the Supreme National Security Council, reported intense negotiations for several weeks between Tehran and Washington for the release and exchange of prisoners in the two countries.

The news site also talks about the release of several billion dollars of Iranian capital held in South Korea because of American sanctions.

These negotiations come as discussions on the Iranian nuclear issue are totally blocked, Iran and the United States accusing each other of not taking the decisions required to allow an agreement.
