Director Taika Waititi will write and direct a new Star Wars movie to be released in the cinema, the Hollywood Reporter writes.

The film will be co-written with Krysty Wilson-Cairns who also wrote the war epic 1917 - which, like Waititis Jojo Rabbit, was nominated for best film during this year's Oscars gala.

When the film will premiere is still unknown. The news was first released on Starwars.com to celebrate May 4 - an unofficial holiday for Star wars fans due to the word-greeting phrase "may the fourth be with you".

In March, it became known that Waititi will also make two animated series for Netflix based on Roald Dahl's Kalle and the chocolate factory.
