Kleve / Goch (dpa / lnw) - In the tax evasion process against a brothel owner couple from Goch on the Lower Rhine, the district court of Kleve imposed suspended sentences.

The head of the sauna club received one year and three months, her husband (57) eleven months probation, as the regional court announced on Wednesday.

In addition, the two have to repay € 200,000 of «crime».

The decision is based on a mutual agreement proposal from the Klever Economic Criminal Chamber.

In the lengthy process that has been going on since summer 2020, the public prosecutor's office had originally accused the couple of not paying sales tax, wage tax and social security contributions totaling almost two million euros.

The focus was on the question of whether the prostitutes in the brothel had worked independently - i.e. had to pay taxes themselves - or whether this was the responsibility of the operator.

The operator had partly exonerated the interrogation of witnesses.

In the end, the operators were convicted for 18 cases of VAT evasion between 2013 and spring 2016. The allegations about wage tax and social security contributions were dropped.

An appeal to the Federal Court of Justice is possible against the judgment.
