Leipzig (dpa) - Despite close ties to the region, every tenth inhabitant of Lusatia is thinking about moving in the near future.

Especially among the 18 to 29-year-olds, almost one in two (45 percent) plans to turn their backs on their homeland within the next two years, according to the representative LausitzMonitor 2021 published on Tuesday.

The Leipzig market research company MAS Partners and the process psychologist GmbH Görlitz surveyed 1000 people in Saxony and Brandenburg in February.

“We were surprised that the issue of moving is still present today,” said MAS Partners Managing Director Stefan Bischoff.

Around two thirds of those surveyed (64 percent) agreed with the statement “I love Lusatia”, 57 percent are proud to be Lusatian and 56 percent identify with the region. Older people are more often associated with the region than younger people - 73 percent are in the 60 plus generation, but just under a third in the 18 to 29 age group. Especially among young women between the ages of 18 and 29, only just under a quarter feel obliged to go to their homeland.

For over two thirds (70 percent) of those surveyed, Lusatia is an attractive holiday region, for 60 percent it is a place to live and for 49 percent it is a beautiful cultural landscape.

Only a third each see them as a region of science, work or business location.

67 percent accept the need for structural change, but more than three quarters miss a clear vision of the future of their region.

Not even every fifth respondent feels very well or well informed.
