If symptoms such as myocarditis or pericarditis appear after being vaccinated against coronavirus, you can receive medical expenses up to 10 million won, even if the causal evidence is somewhat lacking.

The COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team (promotional team) announced today (9th), "We will expand the scope of support for the 'Medical Expense Support Project for Severe Patients', which was excluded from compensation due to insufficient causal evidence after vaccination, from existing severe patients to special adverse reactions including mild symptoms. "He said.

The government has provided medical expenses of up to 10 million won per person in cases where causality was not recognized by the damage investigation team or the damage compensation expert committee for cases of hospitalization in the intensive care unit or equivalent disease after vaccination.

As of that day, a total of 35 seriously ill patients were classified as eligible for medical expenses.

Accordingly, the promotion group decided to expand the scope of medical expenses and strengthen responsibility for adverse reactions.

The subjects include all adverse reactions recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as requiring active monitoring (observation) after vaccination, including myocarditis/pericarditis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and erythema multiforme.

Accordingly, even if it is determined that the causal evidence is insufficient, those inoculated with such a special adverse reaction can receive medical expenses, etc. up to a maximum of KRW 10 million per person.

Specifically, if the adverse reaction that occurred after vaccination is unclear, such as the underlying disease or genetic disease that can cause it before vaccination, and the time required to cause the adverse reaction is probable, but there are few related documents that can confirm the causality between the vaccine and the adverse reaction. is applicable.

However, the cost of treatment or funeral expenses for existing underlying diseases is excluded from the subsidy.

The promotion team said, "The evidence for acknowledging causality is insufficient due to the recent increase in special adverse reactions such as myocarditis and pericarditis after the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA)-based vaccine was administered to the young and the elderly, but it is intended to protect the public more broadly." explained.

It will be implemented immediately from today to strengthen the national responsibility for adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccination," he said.
