• The Rennes metropolitan area has established itself in recent years as a cybersecurity stronghold.

  • More than 4,000 people, including 800 cyber combatants from the Ministry of the Armed Forces, are currently working in this area in Rennes.

  • During 2023, a 7,600 m2 building, called Cyberplace, will open in the Champs-Blancs area in Cesson-Sévigné to house companies working in cybersecurity.

Whether we are talking about cybersecurity or cyberdefence, cyber has become an increasingly strategic issue all over the planet.

In this cutting-edge area, Rennes has established itself in a few years as a stronghold in this area.

Cradle of telecoms, since 1968 the metropolis has been home to the General Directorate of Armaments-Information Control (DGA-MI), formerly the Center for Armament Electronics, on a site of around one hundred hectares in Bruz, south of Rennes.

Under the impetus of Jean-Yves Le Drian, then president of the Brittany region before becoming Minister of Defence, an entire ecosystem then developed in the 2010s with the creation of numerous companies and start-ups dedicated to security of our digital data.

Today, around 3,500 employees work in the world of cyber in the Breton capital, not counting the 880 cyber combatants of the Ministry of the Armed Forces spread over the sites of Bruz and Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande.

A 7,600 m2 building to house companies

In a world where digital is everywhere, the momentum is not about to run out of steam with “250 to 300 private jobs that are created each year in the metropolis”, welcomes its president Nathalie Appéré.

Proof of this momentum, a new “iconic” building of this digital ecosystem is currently emerging from the ground in the Champs-Blancs area in Cesson-Sévigné, where the first stone was virtually laid on Thursday.

Called Cyberplace, it should be inaugurated in 2023 and will welcome in its premises of more than 7,600 m² players all working in the field of cybersecurity.

This is the case of Wallix, a European cybersecurity software publisher which opened its second research and development center in Rennes in 2019.

In a few months, it will move into new premises within the Cyberplace with "the objective of becoming a global company", according to its CEO and founder Jean-Noël de Galzain.

“We could have set up at the Cyber Campus in Paris, but we preferred Rennes because there is the whole ecosystem here to develop,” he continues.

Anssi will soon install an antenna in Rennes

The metropolis will also take over the premises with the acquisition of a 1,200 m² platform, including 170 m² "confidential defense", to house young cybersecurity shoots.

Before the opening of Cyberplace, the National Agency for Information Systems Security will also have moved into a new branch in the Courrouze district.

By 2026, it should welcome nearly 200 agents on its site in Rennes, more than ever on the front line on the front line of cyberattacks.
