The statement explains that Juan Carlos sent his son a letter in which he made known the decision, taken "with deep sentiment, but with great serenity".

"I have been King of Spain for almost forty years and for all this time I have always wanted the best for Spain and for the Crown", says Juan Carlos, adding that he intends to facilitate the exercise of the functions of Felipe VI for "tranquility and the calm "that his" high responsibility requires "and as" my inheritance and my dignity as a person require ".

Also according to the Royal House, the king passed on to his father "his sincere respect and gratitude for the decision". "The king - reads the text - wishes to underline the historical importance of his father's Kingdom, as a legacy and political and institutional service of service for Spain and for democracy; and at the same time he wants to reaffirm the principles and values ​​on which it is based, within the framework of our Constitution and the rest of the legal system ".

The Spanish Prime Minister had recently declared that he believed the developments in the affair involving Juan Carlos - with investigations in Spain and Switzerland - "disturbing". The Spanish Supreme Court, last June, had opened an investigation against the ex-sovereign for a corruption story related to the construction of a high-speed railway line in Saudi Arabia.
