The fight against violence against women is improving a little in Egypt, at least in the legal texts.
The House of Representatives on Sunday approved an amendment that turns the offense of sexual harassment against a woman into a crime.
This act is now punishable by at least five years in prison against a minimum of one and a half years previously.
The amendment further stipulates that the minimum sentence is increased to seven years in prison for aggravating circumstances, such as carrying a weapon or collective harassment, according to local media.
According to surveys conducted by the United Nations, most of the women interviewed have already been victims of sexual violence, ranging from street harassment to touching and rape.
The #Metoo movement has grown in Egypt since last year, with many women reporting abusive sexual behavior.
