Werder Bremen started the first second division season in 40 years with a disappointment.

In the north duel with Hannover 96, the Bundesliga relegated player only played 1: 1 (0: 0) on Saturday evening.

In front of 14,000 spectators at the Wohninvest Weserstadion, Bremen took the lead in the 49th minute with an own goal by Simon Falette.

But just six minutes later, Marvin Ducksch (55th) equalized with a nice lift for Hanover.

The fact that the 96ers were the more dangerous team in the pouring rain had already been shown when Florent Muslija (25th) hit the pole and 27-year-old Ducksch (53rd) hit the post.

For Bremen, what the new coach Markus Anfang wants to work out with his team could only be seen in the early phases of both halves: An active, dominant game with a lot of possession, instead of only approaching the opponent in his own half, as in large parts of the relegation season wait.

But whenever Hannover came into play, it became clear how deep the uncertainty still sits in Bremen.

The team lost its line, the spectators became calm.

At Werder there were eight players in the starting line-up who were already part of the relegation squad last season.

The fact that Kevin Möhwald went into voluntary quarantine in his personal environment after a positive corona test also extended a long dropout list consisting of all the first division players: Leonardo Bittencourt, Milos Veljkovic, Jiri Pavlenka, Eren Dinkci and newcomer Nicolai Rapp were all missing.

How many players will leave the club or join the club is also open.

This completely unfinished Bremen team tried again to build up pressure after the 1-1 draw, but remained far too harmless.

Only Hannover had chances in the final phase through Linton Maina (80th) and Ducksch (82nd).
