The dream of promotion has finally burst, Hamburger SV will play in the second division for the fourth year in a row.

The team of coach Horst Hrubesch embarrassed themselves with 2: 3 (1: 1) at the relegation candidate VfL Osnabrück and gambled away the last chance for the relegation place.

The goals of Robin Meißner (37th) and Tim Leibold (82nd) were too few.

Osnabrück improved to 16th place thanks to the hits from Christian Santos (34th), Maurice Multhaup (60th) and Marc Heider (84th).

HSV found it difficult to get involved. The ease of beating 1. FC Nürnberg (5: 2) was gone. Hamburg had a lot of possession against strong hosts, but lacked speed and ideas. So it took until the 23rd minute before Simon Terodde got his first good chance. The striker failed but VfL goalkeeper Philipp Kühn and missed his 23rd goal. This scene did not initially serve as a wake-up call for the guests. The HSV defensive acted far too passively when the Osnabrückers took the lead. Santos headed in from close range. But the Hamburgers showed a reaction. Meißner scored from distance to equalize, Kühn did not cut a good figure.

But the equalization gave the favorite no security. Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich prevented Ulrich Taffertshofer from falling back again (48th), but the former Bayern goalkeeper had no chance against Multhaup. The HSV did not give up. But after the renewed equalization by Leibold, Heider finally destroyed the Hanseatic dream of advancement.
