Halberstadt (dpa) - The Corona crisis is also making it difficult for the more than 6500 museums in Germany.
On the International Museum Day today, the houses want to draw attention to the diversity of the museum landscape in Germany.
Nationwide, hundreds of houses are to open their doors virtually - and where the Corona situation actually allows it.
The day of action will open with an event (10:00 a.m.) in the Berend Lehmann Museum for Jewish History and Culture in Halberstadt.
The museum will reopen after months of renovation and conceptual work.
Because of the pandemic, the opening this year will take place digitally, as in 2020, and will be streamed. The organizer and patron of the day is traditionally the incumbent President of the Federal Council, this year Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff. The CDU politician is supposed to speak a greeting by video message at the opening. "Museums are lighthouses of our cultural landscape," Haseloff said in advance. "The International Museum Day will show that the institutions have used the difficult time of the Corona crisis to modernize themselves and use the new media to do their job justice."
According to the organizer, around 600 museums nationwide are taking part with around 1500 activities on the day.
Visitors should have the opportunity to get to know both large and lesser-known houses better.
On the website of the Museum Day, interested parties can find activities in their area with the help of an interactive map.
The organizers will also provide current information about the offers under the hashtag #MuseenEntmachen.
