"Dubai Electricity" will launch two satellites to coincide with "Expo 2020" for communications and remote sensing

Saeed Al Tayer: 86 billion dirhams of investments over 5 years to meet the demand for electricity and water

Saeed Al Tayer: "The authority has a portfolio of diverse projects to transform Dubai into a global center for clean energy."

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, stressed that "the wise leadership attaches great importance to promoting sustainable development and increasing reliance on renewable energy as a fundamental pillar of sustainability, which makes it a top strategic priority for the UAE."

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is committed to creating proactive solutions to the challenges of the next 50 years, in order to enhance efforts to make the UAE the most innovative and ready for the future, and to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler Dubai, and aims to provide 75% of Dubai's energy production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050.

On the authority’s strategy for the next 50 years in the field of clean energy, Al Tayer said that “the authority has investments of more than 86 billion dirhams over five years, to meet the increasing demand for electricity and water in the emirate, and the authority is working, through its portfolio of diversified projects, to transform Dubai has become a global center for clean energy, as it combines its work with various disruptive technologies, with a focus on diversifying the energy mix.”

He added: "We in Dubai have an integrated vision to ensure energy security and sustainability, which includes three main axes. The first is to produce more clean energy, especially solar energy, within the framework of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and one of our most prominent projects to achieve this goal is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Ali Complex. Maktoum Solar, which is the largest solar energy project in the world in one location, according to the independent producer system, and its production capacity will reach 5,000 MW by 2030, and the capacity of the solar energy projects currently operating in the complex is 1,310 MW with photovoltaic solar panels technology, and we have 1,550 MW. Implementation is underway with photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar energy, with other future stages to reach 5,000 megawatts by 2030.

He stated that «the second axis is to separate the desalination process from electricity production, and desalinate water using solar energy, as the authority aims to produce 100% of desalinated water by 2030, using a mixture of clean energy sources and waste heat, and the third axis is to recycle Formulating and digitizing the role of service institutions, by adopting the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotic aircraft, energy storage technologies, blockchain, the Internet of Things, and others.

He added: "There is the Authority's Space Program (SpaceD), which aims to build the authority's capabilities and qualify an Emirati cadre specialized in the use of space technologies in electricity and water networks, and to benefit from the techniques of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its disruptive techniques, in exchanging information through space communications and Earth observation technologies. And the authority will launch two satellites, in conjunction with Expo 2020 Dubai, specialized in communications and remote sensing, to monitor the performance and efficiency of photovoltaic solar panels at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex, through special cameras on the main satellite, and study the impact of weather phenomena. Climate change in energy infrastructure and supplies, which enhances the reliability of the electrical system and the sustainability of resources.
